Well, this is my first post. Well, technically, it is not my first post, but posts from my previous blog were deemed undesirable by yours truly so I removed them.
I work for a company called First Industrial Realty Trust. We are a publicly traded company with more than 500 employees and a market cap in excess of a billion dollars (that means the company is worth more than a billion dollars). I am a lowly office intern, but if I do the jobs of an intern this summer, my chances of getting a full time job with the company after I graduate are supposedly increased. Everyone that I work with is very intelligent, and I have been learning much during my short couple months here this summer. I hope the people here (or the people that matter, at least) think I am intelligent as well, so they would not object to me working with them.
I have done some interesting stuff with investment analysts as well as developmental analysts. Investment analysts look at property or land and decide whether or not it would be a good idea to purchase it. They run an analysis of the property (usually multiple analyses) and factor in many different variables. The analysts then solve for a rate of return that FI is looking for and decide on a purchase price. They then have to propose this idea to a management committee (the higher-ups) and they must decide whether or not to pursue the idea/venture.
The development analysts do similar analyses of land or building and decide how to develop the two. Tenants ask for a certain type of building and developers decide if it would be beneficial for the company to suit the needs of this tenant. Obviously, if a tenant wants to lease the building for a longer time, FI is more inclined to work with the tenant and build their building. They run different scenarios, deciding if it would be a good idea to hold the building, sell it, or hold it for a bit and then sell it. It is all a very interesting business with TONS of cash flying around. I also know company secrets. That you don't know.
Funny thing is, I am writing this blog here at work. They pretty much have given me free reign over my internship to find work as I go along which is both a curse and a blessing. It is a blessing, because if I don't feel like working, I basically just act like I have work to do, and do whatever I want. It is a curse because I really don't like doing that. I get bored when I have nothing to do, and I want work to do so that I get more accustomed to it, but many times that is simply not the case. Getting work to do is sometimes like pulling teeth around here, but I manage.
I am writing this blog because I enjoy looking back at things I wrote and how I reflected on them at that particular point in time. I was motivated by south side sense's blog, as he just began as well.
